As the River Region Art Association approaches its sixteenth year promoting the arts in Ascension Parish, they are excited about setting new goals, implementing innovative art ideas, and growing even more in 2009. They invite all in Acension and beyond to be a vital part of the growth of the Arts in Ascension Parish. As a non profit 501 © 3 art organization, River Region Art Association is dedicated to enhancing the arts in our growing community. Their membership of over 100 artists is an active volunteer group representing all art forms, and are solely supported by memberships, grants, and sponsorships combined with lots of dedicated, hard workers. Their doors are open to the community and any artists who would like to join.
River Region Art also organizes the largest art event in Ascension Parish, ‘Awesome Art in Autumn Gardens’ Arts and Cultural Festival at Houmas House each October, involving over 175 fine art, folk art, and performing artists and over 300 art entries in the Awesome Art Competition representing a plethora of South Louisiana art.
Located just off Airline Highway at 1835 N. Magnolia Avenue, River Region Art Gallery provides a home for the arts in Gonzales. The Gallery is a cultural center open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and provides displays of fine art, folk art, photography art, and three dimensional art by members as well as monthly theme exhibits with the community artists invited to participate. Sportsman's Paradise was the theme for the September Gallery exhibit. There are 4 seasons in Louisiana...deer season, duck season, squirrel season, and fishing season. In Louisiana, most men won't get married during hunting season and the brides have to really hunt for an open date!
River Region Art provides ongoing art classes and a variety of workshops for both adults and children. They also provide book signings at the Gallery for literary artists as well as occasional poetry readings. They present ART GUMBO MARKET on the third Saturday of each month in association with the Ascension Farmer’s Market at Hwy 621 and Airline Hwy in front of This That and More Mini Mall.
River Region Art Association offers free children’s art activities monthly with art by PARC at the Gumbo Market. They also present an annual youth ‘March into Art’ Show, present Children’s Creativity Day, and celebrate RED HOT ART in June at the gallery with a community event full of art, food, prizes, and entertainment.
River Region Art is presently planning a large Community Art Show at the Tanger Outlet Mall with the Sponsorship of Harry and David’s. Look for more information in early spring about entering and winning great prizes. It will be for both youth and adult with categories of painting, drawing, photography, and 3-D. They receive grant support from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, the Baton Rouge Arts Council, the Lt. Governor’s Office of Culture, Recreation, and Tourism, the World Cultural Economic Forum, and the Ascension Parish Recreation and Culture Department. They also enjoy and depend on the support of many businesses in the community in order to present this program. Sponsors of this event for 2008 were Eatel, Cane’s Chicken, and St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and received aid from many other small businesses in their advertising program. All this is accomplished by the enthusiastic volunteer members of River Region Art Association who are dedicated to making Ascension Parish a better place to live.
The River Region Art Association’s mission is to promote and help artists and to enrich our community with ‘The Arts’. They strive to bring community, culture, and art all together.
